Gage Calibration Services

Almen Gages should be calibrated annually to assure proper performance. We can perform all the necessary measurements to ensure compliance to standard or special Almen gage requirements. We use templates and step blocks certified traceable to NIST for all of our conformity tests. Allow approximately one week for calibration.

Our Basic Calibration includes; inspection, replacement of balls and batteries, post adjustment, and indicator calibration. If the gage head shows excessive wear the entire head will be replaced but at an additional cost. The check block is replaced if it does not meet flatness criteria of SAE J442 (.005mm). The digital indicator is replaced (if necessary). If additional work is required we will advise cost prior to proceeding with repair. The Almen gage Jr. calibration includes a replacement of the balls and the indicator tip for functionality and accuracy.

Model Number Basic Calibration New Gage Head (if needed)
TSP-3B $200.00 $334.69
TSP-Jr $175.00

Almen Gage Calibration Procedure

New Almen gages come with a "Certificate of Calibration" to J442 (also qualifies to MIL-S-13165C, AMS-S-13165, SAE AMS2432C and Boeing BAC5730N) when they are first manufactured to assure compliance with industry-accepted specifications. Ball and post placement locations are measured and recorded. Ball height and ball plane flatness are also checked. The analog or digital indicator is also exercised to demonstrate it has required accuracy. The data is archived and then the gage is shipped back to the customer. Note: we offer both analog (TSP-Jr) and digital indicator (TSP-3) style Almen gages. These are configured to two different specifications.

  • SAE J442 is used for TSP-3 gages - SAE J442 requires indicator higher resolution of .0025mm graduations.
  • AMS-S-13165 is used for TSP-Jr gages - AMS-S-13165 requires inch resolution of .001".

Factory Calibration Procedure

Electronics Incorporated uses a precision 9-hole template and special step blocks to certify that the gage meets all the construction requirements of SAE J442. This task can usually be done in three days. The 9-hole template and step blocks are inspected and certified annually by a qualified A2LA laboratory and traceable to NIST.
